BURNSVILLE, Minn. (September 2017) –Valley Natural Foods today announced it will expand its grocery and retail operation in Burnsville, Minn. The company acquired a building adjacent to its existing 15,000-square-foot retail center and plans to add 8,000 square feet to its grocery operations and 3,000 square feet to its retail space.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Friday September 8 at 13750 Country Road 11.
Built by Loeffler Construction and designed by Wilkus Architects, the building will be remodeled to expand its food service, catering service, fresh departments and shopping convenience. The store will feature some of the latest technology in energy-efficient equipment, and will include a new community room for meetings and a classroom for cooking classes.
For 40 years, the company has served the southern Twin Cities metro with organic, local and natural products within its grocery, produce, meat and deli departments. After steady growth in the 70s and 80s, the co-op faced a set-back, when in 1989, it burned in a mall fire. Relocating five months later to Grand Avenue in Burnsville, Valley Natural Foods continued strong growth and eventually relocated and built the store at its current location.
“Our new, expanded grocery operation reflects the tremendous surge in organic foods that we are enjoying locally and around the country,” said Susan McGaughey, general manager of Valley Natural Foods, which boasts 12,000 members of its co-op. “The new building will provide a convenient and intimate shopping experience while offering more healthy choices for our shoppers.”
Existing Valley Natural Foods employees will staff the expanded facility. Construction will begin in September and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2018.
This expansion follows the co-op’s 2016 property acquisition and development of a new, niche-market meat processing plant in Northfield, Minn. Valley Natural Meats, a subsidiary of Valley Natural Foods, meets the growing demand of livestock producers and serves the needs of family farms in 10 Southern Minnesota counties. The plant also manufactures specialty and smoked and cured meats, jerky, hams and sausages for wholesale and retail customers.
